{"id":2009,"date":"2008-01-18T19:04:50","date_gmt":"2008-01-19T01:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.velocity-xl.com\/blog\/?p=2009"},"modified":"2015-01-27T19:24:51","modified_gmt":"2015-01-28T01:24:51","slug":"7-1-nose-gear-door-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.velocity-xl.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/18\/7-1-nose-gear-door-installation\/","title":{"rendered":"7.1 Nose Gear Door Installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pps-series-post-details pps-series-post-details-variant-classic pps-series-post-details-4068\" data-series-id=\"31\"><div class=\"pps-series-meta-content\"><div class=\"pps-series-meta-text\">This entry is part 17 of 39 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.velocity-xl.com\/blog\/series\/07-landing-gear\/\">07 - Landing Gear<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div><p>The Nose Gear Doors are provided as a single assembly.\u00a0 They will eventually be cut into two separate doors.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, I laminated many pieces of fiberglass to create the stock that the hinges would be made from.\u00a0 These hinges are basically a &#8220;J-hinge&#8221; which are similar to the hinge arms used in doors and trunks of cars. They allow a form-fitting piece to swing away from the body without rubbing against it.<\/p>\n<p>To install the doors, first they are bonded to the opening with auto-body filler (Bondo) to temporarily but firmly hold them in position while the hinges are positioned and permanently bonded into place.<\/p>\n<p>Nose gear doors held in place with Bondo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.velocity-xl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/2008-01-17-1618-IMG_5765.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.velocity-xl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/2008-01-17-1618-IMG_5765-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"2008-01-17 1618 IMG_5765\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, the hinges are aligned with lengths of all-thread and then the hinges are bonded to the gear door with an epoxy\/cabo mix.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.velocity-xl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/2008-01-17-1616-IMG_5761.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-2013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.velocity-xl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/2008-01-17-1616-IMG_5761-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"2008-01-17 1616 IMG_5761\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.velocity-xl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/2008-01-17-1617-IMG_5762.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-2012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.velocity-xl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/2008-01-17-1617-IMG_5762-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"2008-01-17 1617 IMG_5762\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once the epoxy cures, the all thread is removed that then eight tabs (two for each hinge arm) that I cut out of fiberglass layups are used to create the fuselage side of the hinges are bonded to the fuselage. These tabs are custom fitted to the fuselage.\u00a0 I numbered them to keep track of where they go and put a dot on the forward faces side.
